As I'm sure many people have heard Joann's fabric store is closing all locations as of May 2025. If you are a textile and needlework based cosplayer like I am I'm sure you're freaking out as well. Now is not the time to panic though, for we have more ways of purchasing fabric to keep our art form alive. Here are some ways to buy your fabric and other craft materials:
Online shopping: If you are reading this, obviously you have access to the internet. Of the best ways you can purchase your fabric is online. You might have to do some research to find sites that suit your needs whether it be spandex, leather, or whatever you're in the market for. Here are a couple sites that I use:
FabricWholesaleDirect: this site has a large variety of fabrics that are affordable with quick restock. This site also has options for fabric swatches
Morex: this site is more simple and has fewer options but it is also affordable with free shipping. This site also offers options for fabric swatches.
Coscraft: this site is what I mostly use for wigs but it offers foam, dye, and other materials as well.
Local shops: You will have to do some research on your area but there can be some real goldmines when it comes to craft stores. In the New Jersey area there is a shop called the Fabric Warehouse in Rahway and in the Pennsylvania area there is a craft thrift store in Ephrata called Art of Recycle. You'll have to do the research but its worth it!
Thrifting: Thrifting will be VERY important in cosplay going forward. My best recommendation is for you to thrift things such as bed sheets (both flat and fitted). Not only are bed sheets good for mock-ups, but they can even BE your cosplay. They are lightweight and large enough to make garments out of and if you can find fitted sheets, you can harvest the elastic from them and keep the flat sheet.
Just because Joann's will be no more, don't give up hope! While people may be panic buying all of the fabric and interfacing they can, we can think clearly and focus on what's important. Keeping our mental state strong and our skills sharp!

I have also heard that Wawak is great for notions! I know that I have also found bolts of fabric at Goodwill!
